Brief Description:  Fuel transfer pump

It's difficult to fill the Onex fuel tank from a 5 gallon jug. Besides being awkward lifting and holding the 32# jug in place, the gas tends to drip and spill on the windshield and glareshield even with an auto-sealing spout on the jug.

I bought a 12V self-priming fuel pump suitable for fuel transferring. With 3 feet of 5/16" pickup tubing and 10 feet of 5/16" outlet tubing, fuel flow is about 2/3 gallon per minute so it should take about 8 minutes to empty the 5 gallon jug. Flow might be higher with larger tubing, but the filter and fittings on the pump are sized for 5/16". The pump kit includes an in-line fuel filter that drops the pickup tube to the bottom of the fuel jug.

The pump is an "Autobest" part# 42S, found on Amazon for about $24.

Removed the wingtips and brought them home for painting. The next few days look like poor weather for flying.

7-17-14 rev 1: Installed a 5/16-3/8 hose adapter at the pump outlet. Installed a shutoff valve at the end of the fill hose with an 8" tube extension to go into the Onex filling hole. Procedure: put both ends of the hose in the 5 gallon jug. Open the valve and turn on the pump to push all the air out of the hose. Shut the valve, place the valve outlet in the Onex tank and turn on the valve, watching the tank level. Turn off the valve when full. Remaining fuel in the fill hose can be returned to the jug by removing the suction line and turning on the pump until all fuel in the hose is blown into the jug. Going to 3/8 hose didn't improve flow much. Still requires about 7.6 minutes to transfer 5 gallons.
